Townhouse, Shoreditch

London

  • Brief

The client wished to create a spectacular and unique large single residential unit within the discrete envelope of an existing historical industrial property.

  • Design Proposal

Our proposal created a single house with a Gross Internal Area of approximately 19k sqft, including eight en-suite bedrooms, garaging for multiple vehicles, swimming pool, car lift, lift, new feature stair, escape stair, gym, entertainment suite, primary reception on ground level with kitchens and dining, and a further two reception rooms on the upper floors, all with an openable rooflight over the centre. The property would be exceptional in terms of accommodation, and yet discrete because of the historic envelope.

The design proposal created six en-suite bedrooms on the first floor around a curved library and spectacular stairwell, with two further bedroom suites on the second floor facing in to a large informal reception space with plants and a large opening rooflight.

On the ground floor the kitchens and ancillary accommodation are stacked adjacent the road, with a central formal dining room facing in to the stairwell, and a large reception room opening to the rear terrace. The discrete entrance off the street would be through the existing coachway arch, with the inset lobby area also forming a full car lift to access the floors of basement parking below.

The feature stair runs through the full six floors of the property rising from Basement 2 past basement 1, Ground, past ground mezzanine, to the First and Second floors with a sunlit void above. The Basement plan then shows the multi-car garaging, accessed via a car lift, the feature stair running from the top of the building to the bottom, a central entertainment suite, and a gym to the rear, with an abstract swimming pool with rooflight beneath the external terrace.

A three storey slot links the centre of the building with a frameless window to the rear. The swimming pool is like a minimal Italian chapel with an arched ceiling and dome quadrant end beyond the rooflight. The library is curved to face a curved stair, with multiple openings, so it gets indirect light only to protect the books.
