Bookcase Installation

There are a series of key dependencies when off-site joinery has to fit with precision into a building which hasn’t yet been completed. In this particular instance however, the contractor had built their plywood, plasterboard and plaster bulkheads with such precision that the dimensions to the finished floor along the full 14 metre length of the library were within a couple of millimetres throughout.

The resultant continuous shadow gaps were therefore completed with absolute precision. All doorways fitted within the same rhythm such that the doors closed against the vertical partitions for the bookcases. The joinery is all machined MDF with a bespoke tapered leading edge to verticals set against a recessed tapered edge on the shelves. This was done to keep the shelves strong whilst also looking slender and elegant. The finish was a 10% gloss lacquer in RAL 9003 (Signal White).
