Scaffolding
One of the aspects of construction which is easy to overlook from a design perspective is the potential complexity of the scaffolding which will be required to complete the project. In this project the inner city site had restricted access and the decision was taken to over-roof the whole plot and erect the new structure from within the scaffolded enclosure. This had many benefits for the project and its programme. The scaffold design involved a beautifully elegant column-free scaffold structure with sufficient height for a compact crane to operate beneath it.
The weight of the crane then needed to be considered, given that it was required to work across the second floor of the existing building, and this involved a substantial sequence of Acrow props beneath the slab.
