Multi-Storey Penthouse, Fitzrovia

London

  • Brief

The client wished to see proposals to utilise the large amount of external terrace space which came with this property, and ways in which this external space could become integral to the enjoyment of the apartment to make it feel special, with particular emphasis on how to link the upper roof terrace with the main apartment.

  • Design Proposal

We proposed to create an apartment which was more consistent with a luxury yacht, with a series of fixed external entertainment spaces all linked with a fully waterproof central stair covered by an openable glass roof. The creation of this stair then enabled the upper level to become a fundamental part of the apartment. Internal accommodation included bedrooms and health suites on the lower floor, rising to primary reception spaces on the upper floor with associated external reception areas and garden rooms. The top floor was then given over to entertainment, with sun lounges and a jacuzzi with a rising privacy screen and privacy canopy due to its central urban location.

Consistency of flooring finishes along with fully sliding openable glass walls allowed for a seamless transition between the internal and external spaces, with planted enclosures extending the visible edges to spaces whilst also providing a degree of privacy. Openable rooflights to the health suites on the lower floors were contained within raised planters, providing open sunlight and air to the suites whilst also maintaining complete privacy. External water features were introduced to provide white noise to some of the more contemplative external spaces when required.
